Student Health Advisory Committee

Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC)

The Student Health Advisory Committee is a group of dedicated students who act as a student voice on health and wellness issues to UMD Health Services and school administration. Members meet weekly for one hour to discuss current issues and brainstorm solutions. SHAC members are given the opportunity to volunteer additional time on special projects throughout the year.

Past Projects

Created a needs assessments for students to measure means of reducing stress and programs that might be beneficial to students.  As a result of the survey, SHAC partnered with the library to create a relaxation space called the Zen Den.  The Zen Den is in the Annex, and has a table set up with journals and journaling prompts.

Sleep initiatives 2017-2018, 2018-2019:  Listen to SHAC member, Mara Rosenwinkel, in an interview on KUMD Radio about the nap zone project.

Developed a new program for Health Services called the Medical Outpost, a drop in service in Kirby where students can talk to a medical provider about symptoms, insurance and medications questions, etc.

Packaged food kits for ill students who were bedridden.

Provided water access in residence halls. SHAC, along with NetImpact, and several departments across campus, worked to increase drinking water access in the dorms through grant funding for gooseneck water faucets specific to filling water bottles. 

Administered campus Food Survey and various presentations and proposals for easier access to nutritious foods on campus. 

Coordinated a food and nutrition workshop series. 

Piloted a vending project for fresh foods in select vending machines. 

Served Health Services in marketing and promotional support.

Breathefree UMD: SHAC proposed and had since supported the smoke-free (now tobacco-free) policy on campus.
