What is Impulsivity?

Impulsivity

  • Impulsivity is related to response inhibition, which is the ability to think before you act.
  •  Develop a “pause.”
  • Identify a specific situation that happens daily in which you can practice self-control.
    • Write down the situation you want to work on with the desired outcome. “When… Happens, I will….” When my brother says something stupid, I will take a breath before I respond.
  • Develop a mindful practice to help develop the “pause”.
    • You can practice paying attention to something in your immediate environment either internally like your breath or something externally like the trees.
    • When your mind wanders, just observe your thoughts, and turn your attention back to what you are focusing on in the present moment.
